Check the needle system required by the machine first. Then select the point for the fabric and a size that works with both fabric weight and thread thickness.
Singer distinguishes household needle styles from serger styles. Do not select a serger needle merely because its size number matches a household needle.
Use the point intended for the fabric
Singer names universal style 2020 for woven fabrics, ball point 2045 for knits, denim 2026 for denim and canvas, and leather 2032 for leather and vinyl. These are different point types, not interchangeable marketing names.
| Work | Style named by Singer | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Woven fabric | 2020 universal | Fabric weight and thread thickness |
| Knits | 2045 ball point | Stretch fabric and machine requirements |
| Denim / canvas | 2026 denim | Layers and suitable size |
| Leather / vinyl | 2032 leather | Material and seam test |
Read paired size numbers together
Packages commonly show both American and metric sizes, such as 14/90. Within either system, a higher number means a thicker needle. Start with the machine and needle maker’s fabric chart, then test on offcuts of the same layers.
Replace damage before adjusting the machine
A bent or burred needle can cause skipped stitches, holes or shredding. Singer’s needle-selection article recommends changing the needle after two or three garments or after hitting a pin. Do not wait for that interval when the needle is visibly damaged.
HD-3000: seat the needle in its recorded orientation
For the Janome HD-3000, raise the needle with the handwheel, lower the presser foot and switch the machine off. Its manual specifies the flat side of the new needle facing away from you. Push the needle fully up into the clamp before tightening the screw. Use another model’s own orientation instructions rather than applying this direction universally.
